Update: The V.E.T. released LittleGirl at 5 p.m. today, and she's so happy to be home - but a little wobbly from painkillers and sedatives. It was a severe urinary infection, so hopefully she'll be all fine again after the antibiotics and antispasmodics she has to take (very reluctantly!) for a week. She finally went to the litter pan, and after all those IV fluids, she REALLY went to the litter pan!
Thank you all so much for your wonderful purrs and purrayers.
At 12:30 a.m. today, Artsy Catsy's LittleGirl was rushed to the emergency V.E.T. after she suddenly began hissing and screeching in pain and trying desperately to urinate, to no avail. Not even a drop. It was a very traumatic v.e.t. visit, because he SQUEEZED her tummy to force urine out so he could test it -- no sedation, no catheter, just squeezing the poor little thing :-(
The tests showed lots of blood and an extremely high protein count and white count in her urine. He thinks it's a urinary tract infection, but since LittleGirl is 12 years old, we're worried it might be a more serious problem with her kidneys.
The v.e.t. had to literally PEEL our terrified LittleGirl off her meowmie Suzanne to start her immediately on intravenous fluids and antibiotics and keep her in the hospital.
LittleGirl could sure use your purrs and prayers -- and your advice. Have any kitties out there had similar problems? And does anyone know what can cause a kitty to have too much protein in its urine?

Poor LittleGirl. That must have been a very traumatic vet visit. I will keep her in my thoughts and prayers, but I'm afraid that I don't know anything about such problems.
Poor LittleGirl. :( Me and my humans are keeping her in our purrayers. I hope LittleGirl will be okay.
I'm new to cats myself, but have posted this on the Cat Blogosphere and you should soon have lots of help.
Little Girl and her entire family are in our prayers here....

Oh no, I am very sad to hear that LittleGirl is sick. When I had my bladder stones, it caused my urine to be bloody, and stones can also cause blockages, although it is more common in boy cats. Bladder stones can be readily treated with special food, or surgery, so I am hoping that is what she has, and not something more serious like kidney disease. Please let us know when you find out more. I am purring and purring for LittleGirl.
We are sorry to hear about LittleGirl. Hopefully the antibiotics work and she feels better soon.
We hope she's better real soon. Christine and FAZ
We don't have any experience with that type of problem but we are sending lots & lots of purrs & prayers over to you,

From mom: Please check out the Feline diabetes message board "Community" - there are very knowledgeable cat moms & dads there who have dealt with many health problems in addition to diabetes. They may be able to give you some answers, links & advice.

Oh my, our purrayers will go out for poor LittleGirl! I hope all there is to it is a bladder infection. Will she be getting more tests?
We're not sure about cats but one thing that I'd wanted check in a human is their kidney function and also their hydration level. Dehydration can cause the protein to be concentrated relative to the amount of fluid. It can also be a sign of decreased kidney function--which is one thing they look for in human diabetics.
Diet can help if there's some decreased kidney function. If the blood work is poor (high BUN and Creatine) you can always try naturopathic medicine. There are some things those docs can do that are amazing.
First things first though--there is an infection and she'll feel a lot better if she gets rid of that.
Purrs
I was going to suggest something, but Latte beat me to it. There are all kinds of beans at SICC and they have had all kinds of issues...
Meowm and I will purray for Little Girl to be okay.
Luna here. I's had bladder problems most of my lif, so'z you can liv with it.
It is unusual for a girl kittie to totally block like that. Different plumbing. (ask your mother)
Hang in there LittleGirl. And be suur to bite that V*T next chance yoo get. That was just mean.

Poor Little Girl! That sounds like a terrible terrible thing that the vet did, but maybe he had a reason. I hope she is OK and that the antibotics clear everything up very soon. It is never fun being sick!

Glad to hear LittleGirl is home! I hope she recovers quickly. Sending lots of healing purrs her way.
Old cats often get kidney problems. My old Max (20) had it too, before he died. It started when he was 17 yrs old. I don't know if she eats already diet or not, but usually the infection goes away with antibiotics. But they usually drink a lot. I just discovered your blog and admired your sidebar which is so cute and then I read your problems with little girl. My godness this vet must be a monster to squeeze her without any other help ! I remember that my Max had got an injection which made him empty his bladder but he didn't suffer at all! Is this a good vet or is he specialized for cows and other big animals, his methods seems very cruel to me !
We're so glad that we came back & saw that LittleGirl is home! Every cat feels better at home - hope the meds make her all better.
Lots more purrrrrrrrs,
China Cat & Willow
We're glad to hear she is back home now. We've had many male cats with crystals and bladder infections and Obi even had to have a penile urethrostomy (penis amputation) for his problems. Many times these conditions can be controlled through prescription diets and getting the cat to drink more water. Fountains, more water bowls, sinks full of water, tuna juice, clam juice, etc.
Luf, Us
I had exactly the same problem with one of mine a couple of weeks ago and, coincidentally, I had asked the vet the very same question when she said there was protein in his urine. She said this was also an indication of an infection.
The important thing, she said was that mine didn't have any crystals in it. Those, she said, might indicate more serious problems. That might be something you can ask about. Sorry, I can't be more precice, because I am also translating from our conversations in Spanish.
As for causes, we also discussed this. Some cats are just suseptible, but age, diet, weight and diabetes are all factors that can influence. I have all four of mine on special urinary formula food for 2-3 months, then we're going to review the situation.
Please give LittleGirl an extra hug from me, when she feels up to it.
Glad to hear that she is doing better, it's no fun being sic. Headbutts and purrayers your way.
We just heard about Little Girl, and we are glad she is back home. The old lady cat called Kitty Yumbum got cystitis when we furrst knew her, and owr mum had to give her injeckshuns efurry day furr a week, and after that she wuz rite as rain. She wuz only a little girl too. The V E T sed dat sumtimes stress can cawse urinary infeckshuns in cats.
Glad to hear she's home safe and sound. FAZ
Poor LIttleGirl. We are so happy she is home safe and sound and on the mend. We are sending purrs and headbutts from the Big Piney Woods
I've had LittleGirl in my thoughts and prayers and am so glad she is home and hopefully doing much better now that her meds have had a chance to kick in! Poor girl! I know how ya feel!
I am so glad to read that LittleGirl is home. I hope that she will be feeling better really soon. Really going to the litter pan looks like a good sign to me.
