Casting Call for Literary StarCats

Callie, get out of the employee lounge and post this on our blog! Borders Books is seeking photos and stories about pets who were formerly homeless, but now own humans who answer their every need, for their upcoming book, Hopeful Tails: Stories of Rescued Pets and Their Forever Families. One lucky pet will be named the Borders Pet, will appear on the book's cover, and be featured in Borders stores and online. And the pet's owner will get a library of pet books. Even better, a portion of the book's sales will be donated to the ASPCA.

Let the cat blogosphere know this important info, so we can turn this pet book into a CAT book! Tell everyone they can enter here: Borders Pet Project. What? No, Callie, you may not take a break now. We have to submit stories and photos of the entire ArtsyCatsy staff to Borders, so you're working overtime!

Hi, there,

Anyone submitting to contests such as this should be aware that they are giving away forever the right to use the pictures and words they submit. I don't think that's right!

"All submissions must include a completed submission form and consist only of original photographs and materials prepared or created by entrant. By making a submission, entrant (i) grants to Wiley the right and license to publish all materials and photographs submitted by entrant in all versions and editions of the Book, in all media of expression now known or later developed, and in connection therewith, including on the cover and in any advertising and promotional material related thereto, for the full term of the copyright in the Book, including all extensions thereof without any further payment or consideration and (ii) warrants that all materials and photographs are original and do not infringe upon the rights of any third party. Entrant shall indemnify and hold harmless Wiley and Borders, Inc., its parent, affiliates, subsidiaries, agents, employees and assigns ("Borders") from any damages arising from a breach of entrant's warranties."

Aloysius, these are very standard terms for book submissions, and don't state that you're giving away forever the rights to use the pictures and words you submit. It simply states that you're giving the publishing company the right to use your pictures and words in their book and all its promotional materials.

I wouldn't be concerned about this, first because it's a standard agreement, and second because we have so many pictures and words about our kitties that even if we HAD to give up the rights to one of them, we have lots we can still use!

Grr, Midnight & Cocoa, us too! Rocky was rescued at 1 day old when a raccoon killed his stray mama & littermates; Callie was a baby feral living in a garage; Fracas rescued from under a pickup truck; Lucy, Oscar, Bitsy, BlackieBear & Sibley from the streets; Ivan from a nasty pet store that got closed down; and Atlas, Somber, & LittleBit from an abandoned house; and Casey, Fred & Holly from Humane Shelters.
