Tree Woes Wednesday

Here I go again, forced to take matters into my own paws, and drag out my tree trimming equipment and go rent a bucket truck! We had a thunderstorm yesterday, and it disproved the old axiom that "lightning never strikes twice in the same place."

Several years ago, lightning struck the ginormous catalpa tree in our backyard, and half the tree has been dying ever since. Well, yesterday, lightning struck it again!! It sounded like a bomb hit our house, and our telephone service is still fried!

I went outside to check it out, and besides an explosion of bark all over our yard, this is what I found:
That dark streak down the middle of the trunk is where lightning struck the first time. The lighter streaks on the sides and the stripped bark is where lightning struck yesterday. The streak goes from the top of the tree to the ground, and this tree is at least 5 stories high!

The doofus humans should've had this tree fixed years ago! Now they have no choice, because it's going to fall down and crush Artsy Catsy! Look how it towers over our two-story house and all the power lines:
No doubt it would take out our neighbor's house, too, and probably half the neighborhood: Well, the humans have been on the phone all day, calling tree services, calling arborists to see if the tree can be saved, calling insurance companies, calling, calling, calling. I say, JUST DO IT! More storms are coming even as I type, so I'm going out there to topple the thing myself -- before I end up with a tree trunk up my tuchas while I'm trying to nap!! I mean, a CAT can handle a CATalpa, right?

That is very sad because that tree is beautiful! A few weeks ago when two of our trees fell down, we had to call about 7 different tree services before we finally got someone to come out. And one place came out, looked at the trees, and then said they would have another person come out to do the estimate. Then someone would call to schedule an appointment for the work. And we had several no-shows. Who ever knew it was so hard to get a tree service to come out!?!?! I hope you have better luck.

I think you should leave the work to humans whenever possible Rocky!

I agree with Daisy, it is a lovely tree.

P.S. I'm a happy bachelor, Rocky!

That looks pretty scary, that tree hanging there. Yep, you should be able to handle the tree people. Good luck and we hope it gets cut before it falls!!

Wow,Rocky. Be very very careful when you cut down that tree. Are you sure those loppers will do the job?

I agree with Cheysuli: avoid work if at all possible. But I think your theory is 100% correct. A CAT should be able to handle a CATalpa.

That poor tree. I know you're impatient with the peoples, but I think you should probably leave the manual labor to them. Kitties make better snoopervisors than laborers. :)

Please tell Lucy that she made Mommy snort out her diet coke picturing Rocky jumping at a Navy Bean.

Too bad you can't just teleport it to a landfill, or woodpile, Rocky..I mean, you might break a sweat or somethin'! The arborists are the same in Texas, very difficult to get one to actually DO something.

We know what it sounds like when the tree gets hit. That is a ginormous BOOM and everycat jumps up. hoo lordy.

Okay, Rocky... I think you should leave this to the experts. So, put those measily tree pruners back in the garage! That tree is huge and you are a cute little guy. Stay safe!!

wow, that is amazing. be careful, you certainly don't want to be in that tree if lightening hits it again. you might get a perm!
good luck to your beans getting someone to take care of it. maybe the utility company can get someone faster since it may mess up the wires?

hey, when you get a chance, check out my power suit i got for me work on the cat advisory board!

A CATalpa tree - I like the sound of that. And, it looks very impressive too. Imagine having lightning not once but twice that is terribly exciting. It would be a shame to lose the tree but on the other hand you don't really want it to land on Artsy Catsy either. Big decisions. FAZ

I agree with princess--leave the tree trimming to the humans. I'd suggest staying inside, under a sturdy piece of furniture, until they get it taken care of.

I think you should let the beans do the hard work and stick to what you are best at: bossing them around!

Oh what a neat tree. And of course the dirty jobs always go to the Kitty Cats. Humans... Hmph...

Be careful! Purrs

We have Catalpa trrrees at my countrrry home. They arrre fast grrrowing and easy to plant--you prrrobably know this alrrready. Just cut the trrree down and plant anotherrr. Although I must say a five storrry trrree no matterrr what kind is imprrressive!

P.S. No, I did not paint that lion picturrre by myself--the one forrr Dragonheart. I am morrre into carrrving my talons into my olive trrree than painting.

Do be careful, all you guys!

Rocky, leave it to the beans! We don't want you next disproving that cats always land on their feet. That's what staff are for - the dirty and dangerous work. Mine need to attend to a few trees themselves... and the roof... and some plumbing... ::sigh:: it's hard to find good help.

Fisher here - up at 4 AM to get my own time on the computer and find you guys. I am sad for the tree but so happy for your safety. Do you climb? What will you climb now? Any curtains in the house? Much fun and very annoying!
